CUB SCOUTS

Cubs are boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 11. The objective of the cub scouts is to provide a group environment which is stimulating, physical and directed towards satisfying the childs basic need to face and overcome challenges.

The activities are based on the natural sense of fun and enthusiasm of the age group and thus the training is achieved largely through games, interaction in small group and activities.

Cub scouts comprise of a Pack, which is limited to 24 cubs of four sixes. Cub Scout sixes are lead by a Sixer, who is generally one of the older Cub Scouts and is appointed by the leader after consultation with the other leaders as having known leadership qualities. The sixer is liked and respected by others in the six. A sixer is recognised by having a special sixer badge on the left pocket of the uniform. They are helped by a Second, who is identified by their Second badge. A second is also one of the older cubs who has displayed leadership qualities.

Cub Scout adult leaders are known by names which are derived from the Jungle Book by Ruydard Kipling. Recognising that children of cub scout age have a lively imagination, the program uses Kipling's Jungle book as its theme, The "Jungle Book" provides action and excitement combined with the moral code of the jungle law. There is development from one skill to another (training expressed in all stories of Mowgli), there is physical fitness, love of nature, self reliance, obedience, loyalty and courtesy. Therefore, all parts of  Scouting philosophy can find illustration in "the Jungle Book"

The Cub Scout Leader is called Akela (The wolf who stands alone) all other leaders are also named after characters from The Jungle Book such as Baloo, Chil & Bagheera.

Cub Scouts can earn achievement badges by doing that interest them and learning new skills like cycling, electronics, sports, cookery, boating and more. There are also special Boomerang badges which can be earnt by doing things like tying knots, first aid, hiking in the bush and building models. There are three levels.. Bronze, Silver and Gold.
